Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment
Building a Healthy, Confident Smile — Step by Step
What Is Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment?
By beginning treatment early, we can correct developmental issues before they become more complex, ensuring the best possible outcome for your child’s oral health and appearance. The goal is to achieve a balanced, stable, and natural smile that remains healthy and functional throughout life.
Why Early Treatment Matters?
Delaying treatment can lead to more complicated or invasive procedures later, such as extractions or jaw surgery. Early orthodontic care allows Dr. Winnard and his team to:
- Correct bite and jaw alignment early.
- Prevent overcrowding and tooth extractions.
- Guide the proper eruption of permanent teeth.
- Promote healthy facial growth and balance.
Early, gentle intervention means fewer challenges later — and a more confident smile sooner.

A Foundation for a Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles
Phase One treatment focuses on helping the jaw develop properly to make room for permanent teeth and improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together.
Children who show early signs of jaw misalignment, narrow arches, or crowding may greatly benefit from this stage.
Typical Phase One goals include:
- Creating space for erupting permanent teeth.
- Correcting bite problems early.
- Improving facial symmetry.
- Preventing the need for future extractions or surgery.
During this stage, orthodontic records such as digital scans, X-rays, and photos are taken to customize the treatment plan. Appliances such as expanders, partial braces, or space maintainers may be used, depending on your child’s needs.
Resting Period: Monitoring Natural Growth
After Phase One, your child enters a resting phase while the remaining permanent teeth erupt naturally.
During this period, our team monitors progress with regular checkups — usually every six months — to ensure teeth erupt in proper alignment and that jaw growth remains balanced.
If necessary, certain baby teeth may be removed to guide proper eruption and prevent impaction.
Perfecting the Smile
Once all permanent teeth have erupted, Phase Two begins. This stage aligns teeth precisely and ensures that every tooth fits harmoniously with the lips, cheeks, and tongue.
What to expect during Phase Two:
- Full upper and lower braces or Invisalign® clear aligners.
- Treatment duration of about 18–24 months..
- Final bite adjustments for function and aesthetics.
- Retainers to maintain your child’s beautiful new smile.
This final phase completes the transformation — ensuring a strong, confident, and healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.
